WHAT DOES THE CONTROLLER ACTUALLY DO?
Maintains the County’s accounting records and financial reports.
Recommends a responsible annual budget and provides financial analysis to the County Commission.
Conducts audits and reviews internal controls to help prevent waste, errors, and misuse of public funds.
Oversees purchasing and administers important property-tax functions, including tax relief and appeals.
The County Commission makes the final decisions about spending and taxes. The Controller’s responsibility is to provide accurate, objective information and help ensure taxpayer dollars are properly managed.
RESULTS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Reduced Long-Term Liabilities: Began phasing out of the five-year retiree health insurance benefit, reducing long-term liability while honoring existing commitments to employees nearing retirement.
Controlled Labor Costs: Adjusted the sick-leave payout policy and reduced the annual merit increase from 3.5% to 2.5% to slow ongoing cost growth while still rewarding good performance.
Improved Transparency: Combined scattered financial data into one easy-to-navigate transparency page.
Budget Clarity: Reformatted the County budget to make it easier for residents to track how tax dollars are being spent.
Together, these changes strengthen the County’s long-term financial stability and transparency while preserving core services for residents.
VISION FOR THE FUTURE
The County Commission votes on the budget. The Controller provides the independent analysis needed to keep the County Commission accountable. My priority is a budget that:
Ends Reliance on "One-Time Fixes": Ongoing services must be funded by ongoing revenue, not one-time savings. This helps prevent future deficits and protects essential services from sudden budget cuts.
Controls Spending:
I advocate for lean, responsible allocations that prioritize core county functions.
Builds Long-Term Stability: We aren't just budgeting for next year; we are building a foundation so the County remains fiscally healthy for years to come.
Taxpayers deserve:
Accurate financial information
Clear explanations
Honest discussions about costs and tradeoffs
Even when decisions are difficult, the public should always understand what is being spent and why.
Property taxes should be understandable, predictable, and subject to meaningful public oversight.
I support reforms that protect taxpayers from unexpected increases while ensuring residents receive clear information about the cost of county services.
